UNIT 1
Reading 1
Exercise 1: Read the text – Прочитайте текст
EARTH DAY
Imagine a day when 500 million people from 184 countries around the world come together to celebrate and protest with a single purpose in mind. This is just what happened on April 22nd, 2000, The day was Earth Day, and the purpose that the people had in mind was to work for healthier and safer world for everyone. It was the biggest celebration of its kind in human history.

But April 22nd, 2000 was not the first Earth Day. In fact, it was the 30th anniversary of the first Earth Day celebration. In 1962, Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator, looked at the world around him and saw lakes and rivers polluted by rubbish and chemicals, forests that were slowly being destroyed every day, and towns and cities full of smog and car exhaust. Senator Nelson felt that the Government was not doing nearly enough to protect the environment. So he spent the next eight years travelling round the USA and talking to all sorts of people about pollution and other dangers that were harming the planet.

Finally, on April 22nd, 1970, Senator Nelson and a group of university students organized the first Earth Day. The event was much more successful than the organizers had ever expected: over 20 million people - young and old, rich and poor, city people and country people - took part.

Today, Earth Day is celebrated all over the world, and some countries even celebrate Earth Week the week before April 22nd, and Earth Month throughout the whole month of April. Over 5,000 different environmental organizations are connected by the Internet, and they help people in their communities to plan demonstrations, campaigns, talks and other activities. But the idea is the same as it was in 1970, millions of people from all over the planet rich and poor, old and young, who want to build healthier and safer world take part.

The problems that Gaylord Nelson saw everywhere in the 1960s still exist, and now we know about things like global warming and acid rain that most people could not even imagine 40 years ago. We need Earth Day today more than ever. So what can we do? Many young people participate through the schools on Earth Day. They organize clean-up campaigns or pick up rubbish in their communities. Others write letters to their Council asking for more environmental protection laws. Still others organize marches to promote recycling and other rivers polluted by rubbish. But perhaps the best way to celebrate Earth Day is to follow the organizers' advice: "Do something nice for the Earth, have fun, meet new people, and make a difference".

Kangaroo is the symbol of Australia.

It is supposed that Australian's native inhabitants, the Aborigines, arrived in Australia at least 40.000 years ago. The first Europeans visited Australia in 1606. The Spanish ship of Luis Vaes de Torres sailed through the strait which now bears his name and separates Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Australia is a self-governing federal state. The Commonwealth of Australia is a federation of 6 former colonies: New South Wales (with its capital in Sydney), Victoria (with its capital in Melbourne), Queensland (with its capital in Brisbane), Western Australia (with its capital in Perth), Tasmania (with its capital in Hobart), South Australia (with its capital in Adelaide).

There are different kinds of fish and more than 300 kinds of coral in the Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Queensland. Tropical fruits and flowers grow on its beautiful islands.

Tasmania is a small island. It often rains in winter and in summer there. A large part of this island is covered with forests. New South Wales has Blue Mountains. They are covered with forests of blue colored eucalyptus trees. South Australia includes Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges. It is the main source of opals. It also produces most of the wine and brandy consumed in Australia. Western Australia with its capital Perth has three deserts: Great Sandy, Gibson and Great Victoria.

Before real roads and railways came, the Murrey River carried people and goods from the east up into the country.

Australia is rich in gold, silver, iron, coal and many other precious metals. Also it is reach in coal, petroleum and uranium. A vast diamond deposit was found in Western Australia.

FARADAY
Michael Faraday, the great English physic, was born in 1791 in a family of a blacksmith. At the age of thirteen he began to work at a bookbinder’s shop. He read many books he had to bind and once he came across an article on electricity. Since that time he took a great interest in electricity and even tried to make some experiments.

A well-known physicist Humphrey Davy whose lectures Faraday used to attend helped him to became, an assistant at the laboratory of the Royal Institute in London. Michael worked hard and with enthusiasm. He studied physics and chemistry and even lectured. He helped Davy to construct a safety lamp for miners.

Then he was working on the problem of turning gases into liquids. One of the most important Faraday’s discoveries of that time was the discovery of benzol which finds a wide application all over the world now. He succeeded in improving optical glass but above all he was interested in the problems of electricity and magnetism. In 1831 he made one of the most important discoveries – the electromagnetic induction.

This discovery laid the foundation for the development of electrical engineering. Faraday was the first who measured the electric current and made a number of very important discoveries in the sphere of conductivity of different materials. Everybody who studies physics knows Faraday’s Law. Faraday died in 1867 almost a hundred years ago but we consider him one of those great scientists who laid foundations for the future age of electricity.
